Cecal Carcinoma CT Findings

  • Discrete soft-tissue mass that narrows the colonic lumen
  • Large masses may undergo central necrosis and appear as a soft-tissue mass with central low attenuation or rarely air attenuation
  • May appear as asymmetric nodular wall thickening that narrows the lumen
  • May be difficult to distinguish from cecal lymphoma or occasional ischemic colitis or typhlitis

Etiology:

  • Unknown
  • Genetic changes may result in increased incidence

Epidemiology:

  • > 50 years of age
  • Slightly more prevalent in women

Presentation:

  • Blood in stool
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloating
  • Weight loss
  • Vomiting

Prognosis:

  • 5-year survival rate is 65%
