Sigmoid Colon Cancer CT Findings

  • Discrete soft-tissue mass that narrows the colonic lumen
  • Large masses may undergo central necrosis and appear as a soft-tissue mass with central low attenuation or rarely air attenuation
  • May appear as asymmetric nodular wall thickening that narrows the lumen
  • May not be able to distinguish from diverticulitis on CT
  • Submucosal fat is not uncommon in UC

Etiology:

  • Unknown

Epidemiology:

  • > 50 years of age
  • People of Black ancestry have increased incidence

Presentation:

  • Change in bowel habits
  • Blood in stool
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Gas

Prognosis:

  • 5-year survival rate is about 70%
