Subcapsular Splenic Hematoma CT Findings

  • Low or high attenuation blood between intact spleen capsule and parenchyma
  • Elliptical or lenticular in shape
  • Active bleeding may be seen

Other Information About Subcapsular Hematoma

Etiology:

  • Trauma
  • HELLP syndrome
  • May be spontaneous

Epidemiology:

  • Rare
  • Most commonly occurs in pregnant women

Presentation:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea and/or vomiting

Prognosis:

  • Must be promptly diagnosed and treated
  • For ruptured hematomas, the mortality rate can be as high as 75%
