Splenosis CT Findings

  • Splenic nodule(s) in the abdomen
  • Can be found from the chest down to the pelvic cavity, and less commonly in other parts of the body
  • Homogeneous splenic tissue without contrast and inhomogeneous splenic tissue with contrast
  • 56-65 HU without contrast, 75-97 HU with contrast
  • Imaging features are generally nonspecific and may mimic malignancy

Other Information About Splenosis

Etiology:

  • Splenectomy or other abdominal surgery
  • Trauma

Epidemiology:

  • Anyone with the correct history is susceptible to splenosis
  • Splenosis can present decades after splenectomy, surgery, or trauma

Presentation:

  • Typically asymptomatic
  • Abdominal/flank pain

Prognosis:

  • Splenosis is benign
