Ovarian Carcinoma CT Findings

  • Arises from the ovarian surface epithelium
  • Papillary projection
  • Solid portion of tumor may enhance
  • Tumor usually complex in appearance on CT

Other Information About Ovarian Carcinoma

Etiology:

  • Unknown
  • Increased incidence with familial history
  • Obesity and endometriosis both increase risk

Epidemiology:

  • More common in females who have never been pregnant
  • More common in patients over age 60

Presentation:

  • Can spread while being asymptomatic
  • Abdominal distension and/or pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Changes in bowel and urination habits
  • Irregular vaginal bleeding and/or discharge

Prognosis:

  • 5-year relative survival rates are:
    • Stage I: 93%
    • Stages II-III: 74%
    • Stage IV: 30%
