Krukenberg Tumor CT Findings

  • Ovaries replaced by unilateral bilateral pelvic masses
  • Masses may be solid or mixed solid and cystic
  • Well-demarcated intratumoral cystic component
  • Cyst walls show contrast enhancement
  • The surrounding structures should be examined for a mass

Other Information About Krukenberg Tumors

Etiology:

  • Arise from adenocarcinoma
  • Primary sources include colon cancer, pancreatic cancer and gastric cancer

Epidemiology:

  • Typically present after age 40 but have presented in a wide range of ages
  • More common in East Asia

Presentation:

  • Typically asymptomatic
  • Abdominal pain and/or distension
  • Dyspareunia
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding

Prognosis:

  • Poor
  • Patients with Krukenberg tumors usually succumb within 1-2 years
