Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) CT Findings
- Thickening of uterosacral ligaments
- Obliteration of fascial planes
- Haziness or stranding of pelvic fat
- Engorgement of ovary and uterus
- Loss of uterine border definition
- Fallopian tubes with thickened walls and enhancement
- Complex fluid in the fallopian tubes
- Presence of tubo-ovarian and pelvic abscesses common
Other Information About Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
Etiology:
- Caused by bacteria including gonorrhea and chlamydia
Epidemiology:
- More common in patients under age 25
- Any female who has unprotected sex is at risk of an STI and thus PID
Presentation:
- PID is often asymptomatic
- Abdominal and/or pelvic pain
- Vaginal discharge
- Fever
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Dyspareunia
- Dysuria
- Irregular vaginal bleeding
Prognosis:
- PID is usually treated with antibiotics
