Uterine Fibroids CT Findings
- Bulky, irregularly-shaped uterus or lobulated uterine contours
- Some fibroids may be isoattenuating or hypoattenuating
- Can be small or large in size
- Often found on CT incidentally
Other Information About Uterine Fibroids
Etiology:
- Unknown
- Familial history increases risk
- Has been linked to obesity and diets high in red meat
Epidemiology:
- Uterine fibroids are common
- Females of any age can get fibroids but they are most common in the 4th and 5th decades of life
- More common in people with African ancestry
Presentation:
- Most patients are asymptomatic
- Excessive and/or painful bleeding during periods
- Irregular vaginal bleeding
- Abdominal distension
- Polyuria
- Pelvic and/or lower back pain
- Dyspareunia
Prognosis:
- Uterine fibroids are benign and can go untreated if asymptomatic
- Patients experiencing symptoms have many treatment options available
