Endometriosis CT Findings

  • Multiple complex lesions
  • High-attenuation components within the masses
  • Wide range of CT appearances including enhancing lesions in the abdominal wall
  • CT is not the preferred method of study for diagnosis

Etiology:

  • Unknown
  • Familial history increases incidence

Epidemiology:

  • More common in females who have never given birth
  • More common in females who start menstruation earlier (before age 11) than those who start later (after age 14)
  • Most commonly affects females between ages 20 and 40

Presentation:

  • Pelvic pain, particularly during menstruation
  • Dyspareunia
  • Dysuria
  • Infertility
  • Some cases may be asymptomatic

Prognosis:

  • There is no cure for endometriosis but there are management options for the symptoms
  • Patients with endometriosis may undergo fertility treatment
