Tubo-Ovarian Abscess (TOA) CT Findings

  • Uniform abscess with a thick wall in an adnexal location
  • Often complex, multilocular mass
  • Enhances on CT
  • Increased fluid density
  • Fallopian tube wall thickness > 5mm
  • Septae in the fallopian tube
  • Fluid in the cul-de-sac

Other Information About Tubo-Ovarian Abscess

Etiology:

  • Typically occurs as a complication of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
  • May also be caused by other infections

Epidemiology:

  • Mostly occurs in females of reproductive age

Presentation:

  • Pelvic/abdominal pain
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Irregular vaginal bleeding and/or discharge

Prognosis:

  • TOA can be treated with antibiotics
