  • Entanglement of the spinal arteries and veins
  • Intranidal and/or arterial aneurysms are common
  • Most are located in the thoracic spine
  • Are susceptible to hemorrhage

Other Information About Spinal Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM)

Etiology:

  • Unknown
  • Can be congenital or acquired

Epidemiology:

  • Can present at any age but typically occurs after age 20

Presentation:

  • Typically asymptomatic
  • Muscle weakness or paralysis
  • Ataxia
  • Back pain
  • Numbness and/or tingling
Prognosis:

  • Spinal AVMs should be removed to avoid serious or fatal complications
