Sinusitis CT Findings

  • Mucosal thickening
  • Polyps
  • Air-fluid level (acute)
  • Thickened sinus bones (chronic)
  • CT scan findings are not specific and present in approximately half of symptomatic patients

Other Information About Sinusitis

Etiology:

  • Acute sinusitis can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and allergens
  • The cause of chronic sinusitis is unknown

Epidemiology:

  • Sinusitis can occur at any age during adolescence or adulthood

Presentation:

  • Pressure around the nose, eyes and forehead
  • Postnasal drip
  • Stuffy and/or runny nose
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
Prognosis:

  • Acute sinusitis will resolve on its own
  • Symptom management is an option for both acute and chronic sinusitis
