Etiology:

  • Blood clot
  • Central venous catheter placement
  • Trauma
  • Malignancy
  • Pregnant or oral contraceptive use
  • IV drug use

Epidemiology:

  • Typically presents after age 40
  • More common in females

Presentation:

  • Neck pain
  • Neck swelling
  • Headache
  • Fever

Prognosis:

  • JVT is a medical emergency that needs prompt attention
  • Prognosis depends on the cause of the JVT and how promptly it is managed
