Other Information About Cranial Mycetoma

Etiology:

  • Caused by fungi and bacteria

Epidemiology:

  • Very rare
  • Typically presents between ages 20-40
  • More common in males
  • Rural farmers are most commonly affected
  • Most common in tropical and subtropical countries

Presentation:

  • Swelling of the scalp
  • Draining sinus
  • Seizure
  • Hemiparesis or hemiplegia
  • Headache

Prognosis:

  • Cranial mycetoma can be treated with antibiotics and antifungal medicine
  • The mass can be surgically removed
