Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome (MALS) CT Findings

  • Narrowing of the proximal celiac artery with “hooked” appearance
  • Inferior displacement
  • May develop collateral vessels
  • Best seen on sagittal images

Etiology:

  • Unknown

Epidemiology:

  • More common in females
  • Typically presents before age 40 and can present at any age, including in childhood

Presentation:

  • Typically asymptomatic
  • Postprandial abdominal pain
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Prognosis:

  • MALS will need to be treated with surgery
  • After surgery, prognosis is very good
