Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) CT Findings
- “String of beads” (beading is larger than normal artery diameter)
- Focal, concentric stenos(es)
- Smooth, long stenosis
- Aneurysm(s)
- Dissection (intimal and periarterial FMD)
- Thrombosis (intimal and periarterial FMD)
Other Information About Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD)
Etiology:
- Unknown
- Smoking has a suspected link to FMD
Epidemiology:
- Female to male ratio is 9:1
- Typically presents after age 50
Presentation:
- May be asymptomatic
- Headache
- Tinnitus
- Neck pain
- Hypertension
- Dizziness and/or vertigo
Prognosis:
- FMD has no cure but symptoms can be managed
