May-Thurner Syndrome CT Findings
- Left iliac vein compression by left iliac artery
- 50%+ narrowing
- Cross pelvic collaterals
- Left internal iliac vein flow reversal
- Venous thrombosis
Other Information About May-Thurner Syndrome
Etiology:
- Unknown
- Associated with estrogen, childbirth, and oral contraceptives
Epidemiology:
- More common in females
- Typically presents between ages 20-50
Presentation:
- Many patients are asymptomatic
- Leg ulcers
- Pain and/or swelling of the lower extremities
- A feeling of heaviness in the legs
- Varicose veins
- Skin discoloration
- Patients with MTS have increased risk of developing Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
Prognosis:
- Treatment is possible
- Complications such as DVT and PE can be life-threatening
