May-Thurner Syndrome CT Findings

  • Left iliac vein compression by left iliac artery
  • 50%+ narrowing
  • Cross pelvic collaterals
  • Left internal iliac vein flow reversal
  • Venous thrombosis

Other Information About May-Thurner Syndrome

Etiology:

  • Unknown
  • Associated with estrogen, childbirth, and oral contraceptives

Epidemiology:

  • More common in females
  • Typically presents between ages 20-50

Presentation:

  • Many patients are asymptomatic
  • Leg ulcers
  • Pain and/or swelling of the lower extremities
  • A feeling of heaviness in the legs
  • Varicose veins
  • Skin discoloration
  • Patients with MTS have increased risk of developing Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE)

Prognosis:

  • Treatment is possible
  • Complications such as DVT and PE can be life-threatening
