  • Inflammation
  • Fascial air
  • Muscle or fascial edema
  • Advanced cases have subcutaneous emphysema along the fascial planes

Other Information About Fournier Gangrene

Etiology:

  • Caused by bacteria
  • Chronic alcohol use
  • Tobacco use
  • Associated with diabetes and HIV

Epidemiology:

  • Rare
  • 10x more common in males
  • Typically presents after age 50

Presentation:

  • Genital pain
  • Discoloration
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Crepitus

Prognosis:

  • The mortality rate can be as high as 20-40% but is typically dependent on comorbidities or complications
