  • Gas bubbles or fluid levels in renal pelvocaliceal system
  • Gas may be present in ureters
  • Dilated collecting system

Other Information About Emphysematous Pyelitis

Etiology:

  • Caused by bacteria

Epidemiology:

  • Typically presents in middle age but has been documented in a wide range of ages

Presentation:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Fever
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Shortness of breath

Prognosis:

  • Emphysematous Pyelitis is typically benign but can lead to emphysematous pyelonephritis which is fatal
  • Should be treated promptly with surgery to avoid sepsis/shock
