Porcelain Gallbladder CT Findings

  • Calcification of the gallbladder wall
  • Can be selective mucosal calcification or diffuse intramural
  • Can be confused with gallstones or sludge
  • Associated with increased incidence of gallbladder cancer

Etiology:

  • Unknown

Epidemiology:

  • Rare
  • 5x more common in females
  • Typically presents after age 60

Presentation:

  • Usually asymptomatic
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Fever

Prognosis:

  • Porcelain gallbladder is benign but can be treated with surgery if causing symptoms
  • It is also associated with an increased incidence of gallbladder cancer
