  • Gas in gallbladder lumen, wall or pericholecystic fat
  • Gallbladder can perforate
  • Can lead to hepatic abscess

Etiology:

  • Associated with ischemia and diabetes

Epidemiology:

  • Rare
  • More common in males
  • Typically presents after age 60

Presentation:

  • RUQ or abdominal pain
  • Fever
  • Tachycardia
  • Abdominal distension
  • Jaundice

Prognosis:

  • 5-year relative survival rates are:
    • Mortality is about 15-25%
    • Must be treated immediately, usually with surgery
