Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma CT Findings
- Typically arises in upper half of esophagus
- Can ulcerate to form fistulae
- Tumor may be infiltrative

Etiology:
- Unknown
- More common in GERD, Barrett’s esophagus and achalasia patients
- Esophageal irritation (hot liquid consumption, alcohol use, smoking, etc.) increases risk
- Obesity increases risk
Epidemiology:
- Typically presents after age 60
- More common in males
'Presentation:
- Typically asymptomatic
- Dysphagia
- Chest pain and/or heartburn
- Cough
- Hoarseness
- Weight loss
Prognosis:
- The 5-year relative survival rates for all esophageal cancers is:
- Localized: 49%
- Regional: 28%
- Distant: 5%
- All SEER stages combined: 22%
