Left Parotid Oncocytoma

Note
66-year-old female, with a well circumscribed, round, T1-hypointense lesion involving the superficial left parotid gland. The lesion is solid appearing and STIR-hyperintense. There are low ADC values within the lesion, and it mildly enhances. The differential includes benign mixed tumor, Warthin’s tumor, intraductal papilloma, oncocytoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma, among many others. On histologic section following complete resection, a diagnosis of parotid oncocytoma was given. Parotid gland oncocytomas are uncommon, benign salivary tumors. The lesions are rich in mitochondrial laden epithelial cells called oncocytes. Parotid oncocytomas occur typically occur between the 6th and 8th decades. They are FDG avid, and uptake technetium T99m pertechnetate.
