Occiput-C1 Separation on X-ray

Note
Severe head trauma. Lateral C-spine x-ray. Patient is intubated. Nasogastric tube also present. Notice the increased space between the occiput and the C1 vertebral body (arrows). This injury is often fatal. Also notice the significant soft tissue swelling anterior to the upper cervical spine.
