Diagnosis
Spinal Myxopapillary Ependymoma
Note
33-year-old male with back pain. There is a well circumscribed, ovoid, T1-isointense, T2/STIR hyperintense, mildly enhancing mass arising at the tip of the conus medullaris and extending over the upper cauda equina. The mass displaces the conus tip and cauda equina of the upper lumbar spinal region anteriorly. There are two subtle nodular regions of enhancement compatible with drop metastases at the lumbosacral junction. A diagnosis of spinal myxopapillary ependymoma was given. Spinal myxopapillary ependymomas are variant types of spinal ependymomas which are the most common tumors of the conus medullaris/filum terminale region. They represent 13% of all spinal ependymomas. Mean age at presentation is 35 years.
