Type 2 SLAP Tear

36-year-old male with chronic left shoulder pain. The MR arthrogram images demonstrate a chondrolabral separation at the superior aspect of the left glenohumeral joint compatible with a type II SLAP tear. In addition, there is absence of the anterior superior labrum with hypertrophy of the middle glenohumeral ligament and prominence of the anterior band of the inferior glenohumeral ligament. Of the 10 different types of SLAP tears, type II reflect detachment of the superior labrum and biceps anchor from the underlying superior glenoid. In patients less than 40 years of age, these are usually associated with Bankart lesions. In older patients greater than 40 years of age, they are usually associated with rotator cuff tears. Treatment for a type II slap tear requires surgical reattachment.
