Artificial intelligence (AI) compares with humans for tasks ranging from the detection of skin cancer to identifying tuberculosis on chest radiographs [ 1 , 2 ]. AI is different from earlier technological advances in that AI is able to improve itself over time, by incorporating more data from more sources. For example, proponents of AI predict that by integrating data from genomic sequencing, wearable smart devices, and cloud-based electronic health records (EHRs), algorithms will get better at diagnosing diseases, prognosticating outcomes, and personalizing treatment.
