An Urgent Request When Your Plate Is Overflowing

As I hear my superior explaining the details of a new project that he or she would like me to take on, several thoughts are racing through my mind. My first thought is “Wow, this project sounds exciting and there is potential for me to professionally grow.” My second thought, however, is “How can I take on any more projects? I am already leading several different initiatives. Could this impact my personal life or even affect my career if I am unable to do a great job at this because of limited time?” I pause briefly and then say to my superior: “I am honored that you have thought of me for this project. Although I would love to do this, I do not have the bandwidth to devote the full amount of time and energy to make this as successful as it should be. I am going to have to respectfully decline your offer.”
