Language is a living, changing creation critical in human evolution and, of course, communication. As health practitioners, we are concerned about the lives and health of our evolving, breathing patients. But we ought not to ignore the vitality and appropriateness of the language that we use. Effective communication is undoubtedly important in all relationships; between physicians and patients and their families, it can even be lifesaving.
