A qualified medical physicist (MP) in diagnostic radiology is an expert in the medical application of radiation to form diagnostic images. The MP has extensive knowledge about the regulatory aspects of imaging as well as the theory of image formation and perception. In addition to assessing image quality through routine testing, an MP consults with radiologists and imaging leadership to ensure the optimization of image quality and radiation dose. MPs, especially those who are also active researchers, may possess specific expertise in areas such as informatics, image analysis, advanced mathematics, and statistics. The MP is a mediator between the worlds of science or technology and clinical health care, acting as an educator of radiology residents and translator between radiologists, administrators, engineers, regulators, vendors, and technologists.
