How do we define value? Value is commonly understood through the economic lens of getting the most bang for your buck. Although that concept applies in many industries, value in health care extends beyond simple cost efficiency. With the persistently high cost of health care, the health policy field has spent the decade since the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) [1] focused on alternative payment models as the answer to improving the value of US health care, with mixed results. No industry has achieved a step-function change in performance by focusing on how goods and services are priced and paid for but have instead invested in technological innovation.
