Physician-humanist Lewis Thomas presciently explored artificial intelligence (AI) in his essay “On Artificial Intelligence,” expressing deep misgivings about a world in which machines have surpassed human intelligence. While some dismissed his concerns as hyperbolic, his reflections on AI’s lack of moral agency remain relevant. Thomas emphasized human fallibility as essential to creativity, learning, and ethical responsibility — qualities AI cannot replicate. While AI can assist us, the essence of wisdom and creation must remain a deeply human endeavor.
