Early concepts of using artificial intelligence (AI) to learn patterns from data with the aim to aid in the interpretation of breast images date back to the late 1960s; computer-aided detection (CAD) tools first appeared at that time, with the intention to serve as a double-read or “second pair of eyes” to help combat human fatigue and error in breast lesion detection.
