Innovative techniques for privacy preservation, generalizability, and provision for uncertainty applied to an AI model for diabetic macular edema detection have the potential to improve screening for diabetic macular edema in low-resource settings. Future work should build on this by incorporating multimodal imaging inputs and detection of center-involved diabetic macular edema associated with vision loss.
