Acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is an immunologic disorder commonly associated with allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplants (HSCTs), characterized by activation of host antigen-presenting cells (APCs) by the transplant recipient conditioning regimen; donor T-cell activation by primed APCs; and tissue destruction via apoptosis and necrosis primarily involving the epithelium of the skin, gastrointestinal tract, and liver in the recipient (1) (Fig 1).
