• Gastrointestinal Complications of Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery in Patients Who Are Morbidly Obese: Findings on Radiography and CT

    Blachar A, Federle MP.

The incidence of overweight American adults is increasing; it is estimated that 6% of women and 2% of men in the United States are morbidly obese [1]. Morbid obesity is defined as a body mass index of 35 kg/m or 40 kg/m with and without comorbidity, respectively, which roughly equals to 100 Ib (45 kg) over the ideal body weight [2]. Severe obesity is associated with a large number of morbidities and with early mortality. Results of nonsurgical treatments for obesity have been disappointing, and bariatric surgery is the only reliable method of weight reduction that allows significant weight loss, extended weight maintenance, and control or reversal of some obesity-related health problems [3].
